Fleshy Friday: Zone of the Dead

Every week the Zombie Cookbook shows you why the world would be a better place if it had more zombies in it. This week however, we showcase another review by Lucio Ruggero, who explores some of the finer examples of study material on life after the zombie-apocalypse.

This week Lucio reviews 'Zone of the Dead' (2009, Serbia). Directed by Milan Konjevic and starring Ken Foree, Kristina Klebe and a variety of Serbian actors.

This one caught my interest because of one thing especially: it stars Ken Foree, of original 'Dawn of the Dead' (1978) fame. And yes, he does play a cop again, although he's not as lean as he was back in '78.

In short: as always, the military bears responsibility for yet another outbreak, when through some stupid accident a toxic biochemical gas gets released in a small Serbian town. Meanwhile, some Interpol agents need to escort a mysterious prisoner to Belgrade, and they get stuck in the middle of a zombie-apocalypse. In the end, the cops team up with the prisoner, barricading themselves into an abandoned police station ('Assault on Precinct 13'-style) and having to fight for their lives.

What I liked: it's old fashioned Romero-style zombie action, the zombies look quite convincing, Ken Foree was in it, there's some nice scenes of gore and there are both slow- and fast moving zombies. What I disliked: shaky camera-action in scenes which did not really need it and acting that could have been somewhat better.

One of the most memorable scenes features a naked female zombie, wearing a towel on her head, like she just came out of the shower, attacking the lead actress. So I had quite an amusing Tuesday afternoon watching this.

Yours sincerely,

Lucio Ruggoro
